I have an 8000lb Ramsey winch which I fitted to my cousins Land Cruiser under the terms that when I get a winch bar, I wanted it back.
Now that I've got the bar, I'm debating whether its worth fitting the winch bearing in mind that my old man bought it new twenty years ago and it has never been serviced properly. At a minimum it'd want new steel cable, solonoids and leads and a "jolly good"service.
Is it worth the effort or would a new Ironman/Tmax be a better bet? Ideally I want to buy the same model Ramsey (REP8000) new but I can't find a supplier anywhere.
Thoughts?

As above. They are very good quality. Chances are it won't need much more than grease unless it has seen extensive use.

I have a Warn 8000 being serviced at the moment.
I can let you know the price by the end of the week(hopefully),expecting@$800.
It'll be up there as bearings have mud in them and the controll box wasn't working.
It'll depend on use and condition of yours for best option.
Maybe sell it to him?
$$$ from it plus service cost might be $500 from a new one?

Nothing wrong with Ramsey's better than what you propose to replace it with.
I have a REP8000 Ramsey which must be at least 10-12 years old now. It's been opened up once or twice to pack new grease after being submerged but other than that I think it will keep on going long after any of the Chinese winches have packed up or seized.
On the outside it may not look as pretty as a gleaming new unit but it's whats inside that counts.
These winches were built back in the days when there was no competician from China/Taiwan so they wons sales on quality and strength of build....get your Ramsey back.

Very easy.
Check out the Tigerz11 winch controllers with the option of remote. This is only a 3pin controller and very easy to hotwire though. For higher quality of this type of solinoid then look for the albright controller - these are the creme of controllers.
If you want something that is more tamper proof look for a warn 5-pin controller, but you'll end up with a solinoid pack.
This is a Tigerz11 controller - the latest type and better than the old solinoid design. Albrights are a high quality version of the same.
The classic Warn solinoid packs. Old school and burn out.
