    Winch trouble

    G'day all!
Yesterday I recovered another ditched vehicle, this time with winch assistance. Whilst the recovery went well initially, when trying to spool in after doing the job the winch (Warn XD9000i) wouldn't do it. The solenoid clicks, but that's about it. I unspooled the entire wire and spooled in the wrong way round, so to speak, as a means to get me home without dragging 30m of wire behind me.
At home I tried everything form cleaning the connectors to fiddling with the gears, but to no avail. Then I noticed that even the spool out didn't work properly. So I spent half the night pulling the winch off the truck (fitted a spare one I luckily had for mounting it on the Disco one day as well).
Now my question: who of you can tell me the likely cause of the problem? Where should I start looking? How to fix it? Anyone who has a manual or knows where to find one?

As a side note, the bloke I pulled out of the ditch drove off without even saying thanks ... May all his pistons seize and his crankshaft break...

    Ta for any advice!
    Johannes

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

You can get brushes to fit any thing from EMC Aust.....but they tend to be trade only.
Asdowns Enterprizes will supply brushes for most sterter motors and again they tend to be for trade only.
the local auto electrican should have brushes to suit as most winch motors are nothing more but heavy duty starter motors.

If you're solenoid box has 4 solenoids, the likely cause is 1 not working. They operate in tandem. Sometimes a tap with a hammer will fix it. Same goes for Titans as well.

I helped a woman in a commodore that had overheated in a remote location once.

It turned out that the screws holding a pulley on had come loose and some had fallen out. This caused the serpentine belt to run off the pulley and wear a hole through the reservoir for the power steering pump and the spilt oil on the loose belt was not driving the water pump.

I fixed the belt and pulley, filled up the coolant and power steering reservoir, gave her the rest of my reserve power steering fluid in case the still leaking reservoir ran out before reaching the next town along with advice on how to conserve it and symptoms to watch for.

She never once was grateful or said thanks.

Back on topic. Sorry I can't add to above suggestions.

Have you tried going straight to the terminals on the winch with jumper leads or the like.
This should tell you if the problem is in the winch or the control box.
I assume there is one for in and one for out and it earths through the winch, but I don't have a lecy winch so know for sure.
