    300Tdi viscous fan roar

Just hoping for some clarification on the normal operation of the 300Tdi viscous fan coupling.

Does anyone with a 300Tdi engine get a roar from the fan when they start up (and then it drops off)?

Also, when the engine is hot, can you hear a noticeable roar from the fan or is it still about the same noise and not really noticeable?

Reason I ask: my 300Tdi Disco doesn't roar on startup or any other time really, whereas my previous V8 gave a real good roar on startup.
They are different part numbers between diesel and V8, but the operating principle is the same, so I would expect a roar on startup.

I have checked it's operation when warm and hot and it certainly is somewhat locked with lots of air being moved.

Also, anyone who has replaced a viscous unit; is aftermarket ok or should original equipment only be used?

I was given a 300Tdi fan by Graeme Cooper which appeared good but would not cool a 300Tdi. It cooled my V8 RRC well but I took it off before my 18KK trip for the V8 hub with new blades.

Mine did not roar much at all, and not at start up. Graeme told me that they are a lot quieter and save a bit of fuel but are just as efficient.

I do not know whether this is because the one given me was faulty but it cooled OK.
A Discovery club member with a 300Tdi had his hub die and someone had a V8 spare which they fitted , but it would not cool the 300Tdi , so this tends to reinforce the advice.

    Regards Philip A

I can't say that I have noticed a roar on start up. It has been a while since I have driven my 300Tdi but the Td5 roars when it cuts in on a hot day.

    Come on 300Tdi owners!

    1) Does your viscous coupled fan roar at startup, then quieten down?

    2) Does it roar when the engine gets hot, or is the noise pretty much the same all the time?

No roar on startup. Hardly any roar when it gets hot. Once the A/C fans cut in you can't hear anything else anyway

So far it appears the 300Tdi does not roar at all then, unlike the 3.9V8.

My V8 S2 didn't roar at startup or when revved and ended up changing it as it actually was causing overheating issues (among other things). Since changing it's definately louder and moving air (the other didn't push air out from under the car at idle let alone running). Makes it sound like any other family car with viscous coupling but at least you will know when it stops.

I have never heard it roar on startup in the nearly 2 1/2 years of ownership.
