    Lost power assistance in brakes

    Hi Forum,

Could anyone help with information in regards to power assisted brakes? A mechanic has told me the problem with my brake system is located near or in the engine block (which would take 5 hours to remove, plus parts, plus re-installation), meaning VERY expensive. He mentioned it would be a cheaper alternative to place an electrical assisted power booster on the vehicle. Has anyone heard of this system??
Thank you in advance for any information -- it is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

Telling us what sort of vehicle and what engine might help us to answer your question.

Looking at your other posts, you have a 300tdi Defender.

Find another mechanic or do it yourself. It's just the vacuum pump that needs replacing & it's not a big job to replace.

    sounds TDI ish to me.

its a DIY job to drop and replace the vac pump.

since my weekends gone to crap anyway, go give M R Auto (32846688) in redcliffe a call, take the vehicle there, ask them what they think it is buy the parts and come over here and I'll fit it up.

Vac pump about 20 minute job, Defender a little longer because airfilter assembly needs to be removed first.

Part should be around $400 or so, but make sure you buy WABCO branded one, there are cheaper ones but unreliable.

    Mine too

This gives me some confidence to ask about mine as well. I have noticed that my defender has no better braking ability than an old SIII I used to drive occasionally. I really need to plan my stops. Am I possibly in the same situation?

Yes possibly, check the vac pump is working properly by disconnecting the hose at booster and with engine at idle, should have a relatively smooth vacuum supply. If there is an obvious 'pulsing' of suction, then possibly 1 of the valves in the pump is faulty, supplying way less vac than required. (IIRC the amount of vacuum available should be better than 15" Hg.)
Another problem Defenders suffer from is split boosters, check for vac leaks around master cylinder mounting bolts where they split and leak vacuum. The harder you push on the brake pedal, the more they leak
