There is no setup required. If the Disco1 diff is 24 spline and in good nic then bolt it in and be done with it.
The onlhy difference I noticed is the pinion has a bolt on the D2 and a nut on the D1. We didn't look too hard for differences though.

As far as information about how to change out the internals i:e locker swapping and so forth......Have a look at this link from KAM diffs, not a bad set of how to's

Andrew - thanks
I bought the D1 locker second hand already set up (2 yr ago) but do not know the ratio.
It is 24 spline but set up for a universal not doughnut. Was going to convert back to doughnut but you recommend converting the tail shaft to universal? Would that require a new tailshaft or should I look for a good D1 tail shaft?

Check out the parts that can be swopped from the post at

Keith the D1 centre you have is a 3.5 i can tell by looking at the photo and it will bolt in no probs as long as it is 24 spline and just use a D1 or RRC tail shaft
Thanks Greg - have a few D1 axles in the shed so could have used one of those now I know. All set then for then I break the front one (oh no touch wood). Will put the locker in once Hi Tough Axles ready.

Thanks everyone for replys
I since found out (thanks Greg) that a D1 centre will fit a D2 and more importantly the D1 diff centre is stronger than the D2 version.
So if blowing D2 difs then best quick/cheap fix is grab a D1 centre and swap to unversal shaft - using disco or RRC tail shaft.
As result will keep the D1 diff I have as a spare for the front - still going to put locker in when get the hi tough axles

Here is a demo on how to do the diff centre replacement I will do tomorrow night - I found this site after some google searching which I had to do because my CD player is not playing (rather playing up) and thus I cant read my service manual for any tips on sequence or tricky bits on the job.

This site has all the pics and step by step instructions on what to do - exactly the stuff someone like me needs to see as a tutorial before taking on a task they have never done. Some of you will go this is easy - yes looks that way now I have seen it - simply did not know prior.
When I fit the locker - which will be when the Hi Tough axles are ready - I will also have to replace the bearings as will have to disassemble the hubs. But tomorrow I will focus on replacing eh diff centre and putting this and axles into the new diff housing (to fix the holes in mine rather than weld the holes and then build a new filler plug).
