If you carefully remove the Land Rover badge from the rear door handle, you can get to the lock mechanism
I have a 97 D1 which I have just gone to open the tailgate and it won't open. After doing a search I found that it is supposedly common, but I was wondering how I get it open? Is the only way to access it from behind the door trim? Because if this is the case, I have a storage unit in the back which may well prevent me from accessing it. Anyone got any ideas?

put the key in the lock and turn and hold it there and pull the handle while holding the key all the way around then you can open the door. i did mine just over a month ago but for 3 weeks thats how i had to open the door. to change the spring is not hard just takes time
I managed to open it a bit later and have now removed the trim and adjusted up the door handle. All is working fine now. Thanks for the advice guys.
