Just make sure you have what is expected in writing so there's no confusion about the job (and its cost) or your instructions about what you actually want done.
Same goes for what you get told needs doing. To not do this might see work being done that you did not actually want done. Or also work you actually wanted doing not being done.
This could then lead to your asking the mechanic as to why your verbal instructions were not followed and what is to be done about the end result, which could lead to a reply from the mechanic along the lines of "well, that's your bad luck, isn't it."
Cheers Baz.

There is indeed. Unfortunately it's a story that is the same with any jobs you commit to engage others to do on your behalf. Doesn't matter if they're a plumber, mechanic, roofer, accountant, solicitor...... Get it in writing.
Most service providers are competent and do great work, so in most cases it's not necessary. I have a roofing insulator, tiler, fencer and electrician who are legends. I have plumbers and builders who are not even close. And no, I'm not bagging tradies as I used to be one! What also helps is to see if they have a crap attitude before you decide to use them! I failed to do so on this one.
In my case, my instructions were completely ignored. The LT77 had a failed bearing and third gear synchro was gone. All I asked was that I was called after it was stripped to be told what was wrong with it as I did not want to spend a fortune on it due to having a spare box (for another project) that I could use if a full build was necessary. I was led to believe the mechanic was going to do the rebuild themselves, but I found out afterwards that all they had done was have me drop it at TR Spares and then they had it sent to Award Diffs. I used to use Awards anyway, so I didn't need a middleman......
So my attempt to support a Land Rover specialist (after a glowing reference from my old boy) ended up being a disappointing ordeal and an opportunity for me to be ripped off. Unfortunately the only call I received was the one to say the gearbox is ready. From there it went down hill, with denials of my ever having asked to be called. End result? I ended up with a gearbox that still had third gear synchro ring worn out as the mechanic insisted all I said was that I didn't want to spend any money. Shortly thereafter I got the 'bad luck' comment and the person in question hung up. At the time I should have taken the matter further but I was in the middle of renovating 2 properties and working full time, as well as trying to bung a gearbox back into a D1...... So time was on the mechanics side.
Anyway, lesson learned. I have gone back to doing all of my mechanical work myself now on my old cars. We have two new ones for full time driving so the old ones clagging occasionally doesn't hurt us. And I still use Award Diffs!
