Considering you have just carried out exhaust work i would be willing to bet (if i had any $'s) that you have and exhaust leak.
They makes a nice rattly tappity tap tap sound in forced induction diesels.
Hi guys, I have recently finished having my exaust manifold ground and put back on (1999 TD5 130 crew cab)and now when I put the foot down it sounds like there is a little man with a hammer tapping away in the motor. Definately wasn't there before.
Suggestions greatly appreciated. One I already have is possibly worn gudgeon or piston slap.
And thanks to everyone's input on this site.

Thanks Lucas, I had wondered that but was a bit dismissive as I didn't have that sort of noise when I did have an exhaust leak, just black soot building up under the bonnet but I guess with a grind and refitting a different leak could be the cause, tracking it down could be the problem.
If it's an exhaust leak, it can be found with a bit of plastic hose. Put one end up to your ear and run the other along and around the manifold joints.

Yep! Don't forget the screwdriver up against the ear, too.
I also have a proper mechanic's stethoscope.![]()

It may now be leaking elsewhere now that you have fixed the manifold to head leak, check around turbo and exhaust pipe flange, Regards Frank.
Thanks guys, I've been away for a couple of days but got to sick the head under the bonnet this morning and you're all correct, another exaust leak, this time from the flange below the turbo, the bolt closest to the motor has started working its way out. (How does this happen? it is very tight)
