FITTING FULL LENGTH ROOF RACK TO D1 OVER FACTORY UNIT

I have a VA ('97) DISCO which came with the (virtually useless) factory roof rack. You know, the ones with the removable bars.

I have a FULL LENGTH TJM roof rack from my crashed MA ('95) model which I want to fit to it but I can't fit it until the factory rack is removed.

    My questions are:

    1. How do I remove the existing roof rack mounts (side bars)
    2. It appears I have to remove the hood-lining to do this? (not tragic if I have to as it really could do with a re-line anyway)
    3. How do I blank-off the roof rack mounts after removal. Is there a factory kit for this or do I have to get something made?

    Anyone done this before?

Any help / advice about this would be appreciated.

Not sure if yours is the same but I have a TJM rack that is moulded the same shape as the roof, I had on my D1 that had no roof rails and have now fitted it to my D2 that has the roof rails..

I layed the rack on the roof and you will find that its the 2nd and 3rd crossmembers on the rack that will hit the rails, the rest will clear them.
I marked the crossmembers on the roofrack where they would hit the rails on the roof then cut the 2 cross memebers on the rack with a grinder and removed about a 2' or about 50mm piece of the roofrack.
Then I drilled some holes thru the crossmembers on the roofrack and got some flatbar the same width and drlled that and now I bolt the flatbar under the roofrails on those 2 crossmembers with 1/4 ' S/S bolts.

I have used this roofrack heaps and both on and off road and never had any problems with it..It was far easier than trying to remove the rails..

PM me if you want more info or some pics..
    Hope this helps..

    Cheers Ean

I know someone who has the same TJM roofrack on a D1 with the factory bars.

He took off the upright legs that normally sit in the gutter and took them to a metal fabricator who made up some heavy duty and slightly longer stainless steel legs for him, using the old ones as a template.

I've seen this request a few times - apparently you take the front stuff off, and all 4 grab rails, and you can lower the roof down enough to reach the bolts. There's even a plug for the holes.

    Read this

Land Rover Owner :: View topic - Disco Roof Rail Removal To Fit Full Size Shaped Roof Rack

and the bottom post has a part number for the plugs. DCP7299L seems to be correct. (Plug, blanking) Whether or not they exist in Oz is another matter.
