Okay I am rebuilding my R380 and I am at the point I remove the nut from the lay-shaft after taking the extension housing off.
I have no problem with the socket, as my granddad has a 3/4 drive Elora socket set hehe. The problem however is I cannot make the shafts from turning - I simply cannot see a way of doing it....
According to the manual I am meant to use a special LR tool, but screw that!!!
What have you guys used?
Regards,

Excuse my stupidity, but how do I select those gears? And by detents I am assuming those balls?
have a look at where the shift rods sit. 4th is the rod that moves the syncro thats furthest forwards inside the box forwards while 1st is the one that moves the one at the back backwards.

Alright I will give that a whirl. Thanks
if you cant get it that way and you dont have a rattle gun.
theres a couple of butchers tricks left in the book that involve rubber mallets, sockets, extention bars and an inner tube wrapped tightly around the exposed gears form the housing removal.

Doing it the way your mentioned earlier, selecting those gears - wont effect, break, wear, the gears will it?
nope they've been pulling nuts off of shafts on gearboxes that way since about the t ford.Just dont use a rattle gun if the gears are locked.

As Dave says an old inner tube or a rag stuffed in between meshing gears will stop them turning enough to undo. IMHO an electric rattle gun is a fantastic tool to have in this circumstnce

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
As Dave suggested, selecting two gears at once is the easiest way to do it. I've used this technique many times.
