    belt size

G,day all, just bought my self a 96 Disco 3.9 auto,i allways wanted one now i have it.It started to make a cherping noise from the front pullies.May be water pump, maybe tensioner. Can any one tell me the correct belt size.It has a QH Brand QBR 72238 on at the moment,it seems to be a bit tight. The old one that came with the car is a DAYCO 7PK 2250 it was loose and flapped around a bit.At the moment the tensioner does not bounce around at all but you can move it to change the belt. When the lose belt is on there is no cherping at all,so this is why i am asking the question about belt sizes.I live at Ormeau in QLD and will look out for the troop going to Ormeau on the 14/2. So being a new member I value any advice that is offered.Cheers Dave.

if its anything like a 300tdi tensioner then I'm guessing if you have moved it by hand and not using aq bar with socket to move it then its knackered

    Talking belt size

G,day RABBITS here again,I could not move it by hand and i did use a spaner.I am wondering what belt size other 3.9 owners have.I watched a video on this site showing a tensioner bounceing around, mine does not do this it seems a bit stiffer.Belt is tracking ok.Thanks Dave

Apparantly 7pk2238 is the right size for a serpentine 3.9 v8. But unlike us 300tdi owners, you only have one little bearing (generic number 6203) that sometimes wears and squeals. ( Search 300tdi tensioner bearing ). The other cause of squeal can be loss of tension in the actual tensioner. Like the rear end of a 70's ford after 30 years.

I can only suggest zapping the tensioner bearing with wd40 and see if that temporarily stops the noise. Don't use belt dressing, as it don't work on multirib belts.

Being able to move the tensioner with a spanner is sort of ok. But if the bearing isn't the source of the noise, you may have to consider another tensioner. Perhaps that's why there is a 7pk2250 ( 12mm longer) belt there.
