Depending on what make/model winch you have I'd seriously consider a wireless remote. The Warn one is very good. Not cheap, but by the time you muck about with the in-cabn switch, wiring etc it's probably worth considering.
Hey All
Im working on a project to rejuvenate my winch. Im going to service it myself, install a new solid state solenoid, and an in cabin switch.
So Im wondering what the best way to do it is and where to locate the solenoid. Im thinking of putting it up on top of the drivers side wheel arch in the engine bay so that way I can run the wires for the switch into the cabin.
Do I need to incorporate any fuses for this? What gauge wire do I use and where do I get it? Any other tricks or tips?
Angus

Yeah I thought about that and I might get one eventually, but I mainly want an in cab switch.

Fair enough, just thought I'd mention it in case you hadn't considered one. I'm sure there's someone else who can jump in with the wiring side of things.

Place the winch solenoid where ever suits, keep in mind, the closer to the winch the betterer
Solenoid wiring only activates the solenoids, it needn't be anything to larger, some 3 core 0.5-1mm should be ample
This is where I put mine, after the jazz up
Mine is a Titan and from there I have run a 2 core wire for an in cab controller.
I put my solenoid pack in between the intercooler and the #2 battery, mounted on the front panel.

Angus, I would seriously consider just going remote rather than in cab. It is just as easy to use in the car, and what's better if you are running the cable you can wind the cable out with precision.
I have all the stuff to run in cab, but after the wireless, never saw the need to wire it in.
The wiring side of things will also depend on the solenoids that you currently have. The warn solenoid pack is a 5 wire job. If you run something like the titan solenoid (which is far superior) it is a simple 3 wire control.
cheers
