    Tacho not working

Hi, I have a 93 Discovery 3.5 V8 and the tacho doesn't work. The white wire is off the back of the alternator and I am not sure where it goes - as it has a spade fitting and there is nothing on the back of the alternator to suggest where it should go, so maybe its an aftermarket alternator? Is a Bosch 70 amp, I will include a picture and hopefully someone where to fit the white wire to get the tacho going again.

    Thanks, Peter

Yes the tacho is driven by the alternator,

There is usually a male spade connecter in a rectangular window on the back face of the alternator. Even Bosch ones, if not you need to go to an auto elect and get him to fit a tap wire for it.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Usually only carb Falcon XE-XF vintage Bosch alternators have the correct tapping. To do it yourself you will need to remove the regulator, then the back cover. Solder a wire to any one of the 3 field wire solder points, run it outside and you have a tacho output.

Never seen a Bosch alternator on a Landy unless I put it there. Yours should have had either a Magneti Marelli or a Lucas? around 100amp. Usually expensive to fix.

Bosch aftermarket alternators go up to 130amp, the one in your pic could be off anything, only a sparky would know for sure. I would guess it a replacement alternator as it says made in Spain, this is after Bosch Australia stopped making this style of alternator here for Oz production cars.

I have mixed and matched bits of Bosch alternators for many years, I used to keep a XE-XF alternator spare somewhere around as they are the quickest to adapt to a rover V8. The guts of a bigger output alternator than 70A can easily be fitted to your case if it has the best mountings.

I would certainly leave it on there and tap for a tach output, as Bee Utey suggests. That Bosch alt has the RE55 regulator and brushes all in one, cheap to fix and very reliable. A good upgrade for a RR V8

The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
