    Leaking TD5 Fuel Tank

    Any advice on a probable cause of diesel suddenly leaking from the tank when under pressure? Appears to be coming from the hidden top of the tank.

    I am in a very remote FNQ community and no tech help in town. Phone advice is that it could be a split vent pipe and I could supposedly access it through the rear floor but that looks improbable to me.

    Assuming that you have a Td5 Series II Disco and if that assumption is correct then your problem is most likely a split high pressure fuel line above the tank.
    This is relatively common with the SII Td5 Disco's. There are four fuel lines connected to the fuel pump at the top of the tank and access is gained by lifting the carpet in the rear cargo space and removing the cover plate (about 6 or 8 inches in dia.) which is in about the middle of the floor. The problem then is knowing which of the four lines as leaking.

    A friend had this problem during a recent Simpson Desert crossing and we ended up half removing the fuel tank to get at, remove and repair the offending fuel line. When he returned to Sydney his mechanic only took 20mins to replace it with new part - car was on a hoist though which made things easier.

    This applies to the Defender but they don't, to my knowledge, suffer from the same problem as the DII's.

    Dunno why I assumed Defender. Possibly 'cos the Disco has an access panel.

    That's probably why LR put an fuel pump inspection panel in the DII's but not in a Defender....

    The fuel pump in the D2 has a large silly seal and silly clamp around it to hold it in the tank this may have come loose. Mine did new seal easy fix.

    D2 fuel pipe leaks

    Mangrove Jack,
    I am presuming you have got a D2. Apparently it is common for one of the pressure fuel pipes to rub through where it gets squashed by a body rib near the front of the tank. There was a LR recall on this issue. The thread below discussed once incidence...

    Stuck in the snowys!

    You will see from my posts in that thread that I have had this happen several times. Not that hard to fix but you do need to access the top of the tank to disconnect the broken pipe from the fitting on top of the pump. The RAVE manual will tell you to remove the RH trim in order to lift the carpet, but I know of others that have just neatly cut the carpet along the bottom edges of the trim panels, then roll the carpet back towards the 2nd row seats.

    Thanks heaps for that info. I have cut the carpet and lifted the plate and it is dry and very dusty so I am assuming that the leak is further under.

    Is it possible to disconnect each hose at the tank and filter ends and wriggle it out or does the tank need to be partially removed to make room?

    Do you need to drain the tank...... and have removed the battery leads as the manual says??

    My previous phone advice commented that I could sleeve the split with hydraulic tube...comment?:

    RRC's have them as well as also do D1's.
    Fender tanks are a bit simpler to access AFAIR.
    I just filled mine last week (D2a) and found out fuel came rushing out the top. Think mines a split or badly sealing retaining ring. Going to get another one from one of the Benz Sprinter/Vito vans at work and see if they fit.
    Could give another option to sourcing parts.
