    R380 Oil Pump

    Gday,
I am in the process of rebuilding my R380 and I am reassembling it but when I went to put the extension housing on, the shafts wouldn't turn. So I took the housing off and noticed that the oil pump isn't spinning at all.
So I took the oil pump out to see what was wrong with it, nothing was noticed. However when I press the plate up to it, like when it is installed, the inner oil pump pieces don't turn. So obviously something is not right.
Earlier on when I was disassembling the extension housing, I took the oil pump out and removed the plate and gasket etc...Ive later learned this is a mistake as locating a new gasket is not easy...so I just used silicone sealant...
Is this gasket really necessary? Sure a plastic gasket that is real thin wouldn't allow the oil pump to spin. Because at the moment it is literally locked solid...
If so, where do I get a new gasket? Ive found no where offering them. Though I have found places selling a whole new pump.

    Regards,
    Matt

Thin gaskets are critical in oil pumps where found, the engine oil pump on the V8's is the same, you are talking about very small clearances to run any oil pressure.

I'd fit a new oil pump. They aren't that costly when you realise how important it is they work properly

I fit a new one everytime I rebuild or repair any R380.

    Cheap insurance IMHO

miss the gasket and goop it and you loose the pump clearance and its only about 1 maaybe 2 thou have a look at the surface area of the gears and gonkulate out the friction caused by the clamping effort of the bolts holding the facing parts down....

    adds up real quick.

go to the other side and calculate out the pressure loss you get when you open a tolerance on a hydraulic pump.

its a very very fine line that you need to walk between binding and low flow.
