    Question Which dual battery setup?

    Hi all

I was at the auto-electrician yesterday to get a quote for a dual battery system.

The chap reckons that it is better to stay away from out-of-the-box systems like the National Luna, and he advises to just fit a Cole Hersee solenoid (105A) between the batteries, a voltmeter with alarm to monitor the dis/charging, and use proper thick cables to the plugs in the back.

With his setup, both batteries are used for cranking, both are charged at the same time, but they are disconnected when the ignition is off, allowing only the aux to discharge.

Which setup is better? National Luna/Genesyz or this simpler version?

    Thanks,
    Nakkiran

KISS Keep It Simple Stupid principle works for me. Unless your auto elec wants a small boys weight in gold for the set up, go with it.

    Hey Chaps
NAKS is on the other side of th Indian Ocean... I twigged to this becaue he spelt "dual" correctly
NAKS, you may have to import the Traxide setup... they do have a reputation for being reliable and robust...
    cheers

How do you Aussies spell dual then?

Looks like the Genesyz system is the only LRSA-approved one, so will have to go with that one: Interface2

the single big relay system is great for a quick need it right now setup.

do it right and you can use it as an short term install while you wait for your traxide unit to rock up and then just drop the traxide in in its place.

about the only downside to the traxide unit is you cant use it to jump your 2 batteries together if the primary battery goes flat (unless they've changed it since the last time I was playing with the older units.)

    on the edit...

I just perused the link to the unit you're looking at.

its a control circuit for a pair of relays. you could do exactly the same thing as that kit does with an old ford starter relay, a horn relay a cheap volt meter, some switches and wiring. Probabley for a lot less.

the layout of the diagram also has a potential flaw (well theres 2 but ones more important than the other) in regards to your vehicles battery longevity.

I'd very seriously contemplate giving that product the flick in favor of the back to basics method without the electronic controls Or going the traxide units. If you're not personally inclined to make the effort of calculating out your power consumptions and manually monitoring your batteries, go the traxide.
