Thread: is it possible to retro fit a series II ECU to a series I disco?

In practical terms NO.

no crank sensor ( or fittings for them)
no cam sensor " " "
no knock sensors( or fittings for them)
different flywheel
different cam
No BCEM to interface with ECU.
No ignition switch interlock .

You would also probably need a NEW ECU never fitted to another car with the BCEM functions disabled to have any chance of success even if you retrofitted a complete Thor engine. AFAIK these are only available ex UK.

Thor manifold needs extensive rework if fitted, unless fitting the complete Thor engine.

However I think the Magneto Marelli setup from UK can be fitted to a 14CUX, though I am not sure . You would have to ask the UK supplier.

i would get a second opinion of i was you, i have a 93 V8 disco and also have vapour injection LPG, no problems whatsoever, they install an ECU for the LPG that is triggered by injector pulses coming from the land rover ECU, in my case i have removed this in favour of a megasquirt setup, but it makes no difference what ecu you have, if it fires injectors then it can be used

Im afraid you missed his point , the Vapor injection system is nothing like the Direct Liquid injection and should never be compared , Chalk and cheese !!!

LPG injection works fine on a D1, because its group firing its considered acceptable. If you want full sequential I would go aftermarket ECU, Haltech or similar.
Quite frankly though a D1 goes fine on a well set up gas mixer system, is your car worth enough to you to spend $6000+++???

Well yes everything can be upgraded , but not 14 CUX to sequential.

BTW sequential injection nearly always only works at low revs and becomes batch at higher revs usually about 3000RPM, so the gas fitters argument is bogus.

As I said the 3.9 block does not have a lot of fittings necessary for upgraded injection, and a 14CUX does not have any timing mapping ability which is a major feature of Motronic.

You can upgrade 14CUX with o2 sensors, and add a timing map of sorts by fitting a piggyback but that is all. IMHO at the moment a better solution would be to fit a SYNTEK ECU which is plug and play and can incorporate a timing map but retains the distributor.



The purpose of fitting sequential is for lower emissions, although the Thor Motronic also balances the engine by measuring the change in revs between each cylinder .

I cannot see any reason a 14CUX cannot drive a computerised gas injection system other than the fitter/manufacturer has not done it before and doesn't know the settings etc. I bet if you said Bosch LE Jetronic rather than 14CUX , then the answer may be different as that is all a 14CUX is.
I would try some other gas fitters.
