Plunger lift is 1.54mm at TDC. The same is for the 300Tdi also. I set them at 1.6mm, makes a bit of difference:twisted:.

Where did you get that figure from and how do you go about holding the shaft?
If that figure is correct, I could place the pulley around where I think it should be and mark it on the shaft. Then test the lift with a dial guage to see how close it is to 1.54mm. Then its just a matter of removing the pulley and incrementing it in the right direction until I get exactly 1.54mm with the locking pin in the right position.
BTW.... why do you exceed the specs with 1.6mm?? That would cause advanced injection timing.

I have the dial indicator but not the tooling to fit into the back of the pump.

I got it from my work. It is specifically designed to fit into the back of the Bosch VE pump for pump timing.
You feed fuel to the pump and rotate it until it spills out of No.1 port. Then wind the pump back a little and set the dial guage to 0mm. Then rotate the pump forwards until the lift reaches the specified (1.54mm in this case) which is the exact location where the injector pump lock pin lines up. The rest is pretty straight forward with timing belt replacement.
Procedure for above still needs to be worked out, but I have a plan!!!!

I have looked on the net and the only VE pump timing tool i can find is for the VW and Audi diesels.
Can you have a look at this link and see if it is the same tooling that you are using.

The one I use here was originally used for Toyota 1HZ pumps, works fine.

The VE timing kit on your link looks like it will work ok. I'ts just a standard VE thread with a standard dial guage and some dial guage extension bars.
The one I am using is a Kingcrome dial guage (pn. 5604) and the VE adaptor is a Toyota (pn, 09260-54012) which I suspect is the very same one that JC has used.
BTW..... I have tried to adjust the timing as I described in a previous post and I found it's really quite easy to do. Just get the pump to just before it spits fuel out of No.1 port then just mark and increment the pulley flange until you get exactly 1.54mm of lift when the locking pin is in the pump body and the flange is central to that.
Having said that........ exactly where should the measurement be taken from???? I have a fairly tight fiting pin in the pump body, but can rotate the flange about 0.05mm in either direction from centre on either side of the pin. I am asuming that the measurement is from exact centre!

Now im a bit dodgey an i guess u would call me a bush mechanic but when i did my pump i used no fancey measurements , i put that pully thing were i thought it should go , i then put timing belt on tried to run the motor it ran but not well so i would slip belt back or forward one tooth till i got it right , then i fine tuned it by loosening them 3 bolts that are thier on the pulley i advanced it till it knocked then backed it off a little , job done i didnt use any locking pins or nuffin , just thought u might like to hear that thier is other ways if u dont have access to all the right tools
