    New Radiator Hose Question

    Hi

    I think that this is my first post besides my introduction one! I have a 300 TDI Defender 1997 which i just purchased before Christmas - I searched around for quite a while and it was worth the wait as i found a gem!

    Anyway, I noticed over xmas when we went away that the temp got quite hot which i thought was a bit out of the ordinary considering that the car was not under load. So i decided (not knowing the history of the cooling system to replace the radiator with a 4 core and basically upgrade the cooling system before we go away on our big trip up north.

    So I got all the bits required but I just have a question.... is it necessary to clean out the white residue from inside the new pipes before I install them. There is a bit of a build up and I was just wondering if I should put a pipe cleaner or bottle cleaner through them to remove the residue.

    I could be being a bit pedantic but just wanted to make sure that the new system was clean as a whistle!



    Any advice would be grateful.

    Maybe just put the garden hose down the new radiator hoses to flush, the powder is talc if I recall correctly and would be better not in the system?

    Check the viscous fan hub while your onto the cooling system... a defender with a "10" core radiator and a stuffed viscous will still overheat on hills the same as a stock 3 core rad...

    Also check the fabled P-gasket isnt leaking between the front ancillary housing and engine block. The place to look for dried coolant leaks is below number 1 exhaust outlet down to the sump and forward to the alternator bracket. If there is dried coolant traces then whack in a new waterpump and metal P-gasket.

    Thanks for your help, Yeah Ive got a new viscoius fan too - im pretty sure the other one is stuffed as it has never engaged. I have had a look around the water pump and around the no 1 exhaust and all looks to be pretty clean. Im hoping that the internals are still ok - if she is still overheating that could be the problem - but im guessing that the radiator is a bit blocked and the viscus fan is the answer. Here hoping!
