warn winch turn upside down??
Ive just bought a warn xd9000 winch but to fit it i'll either have to cut out the holes in my winch bar to suit. or i could turn the winch up side down and have the clutch lever on the bottom.
Does anyone know if it is possible to do this with winches? i have no idea as ive never had one?? I wish the person i bought it from had instuctions with it.
thanks in advance for any assistance on this matter.

I think you can dismantle the casing and rotate it so the lever is in the right place. Check out this link - http://warn.com/truck/winches/src/im...8/36138-D4.pdf

Which vehicle?
Which winch bar?
An xd9 should pretty much bolt straight into any winch bar thats worth its salt?
To answer your question I would be hesitant to put the gear lever down low, kinda frustrating to dig it out to engage when in the goop. And either way on an XD9 you can rotate gbox / motor relative to the feet by removing locating dowels / hex nuts if you want things in different orientations... just need to make sure stoopido motor drains actually drain.
More details, pics even... and im sure the combined power of AULRO will solve your problem

There is a ring of bolts at the gearbox end which has the clutch lever. Undo all of the bolts and rotate the gearbox until the clutch lever is wherever you want it and then put the bolts back in. Don't lift the gearbox off or the planetary gears will come out and it can be a cow to get them aligned to go back in again.
Here is the operators manual. 6mb

Futher to what Slunnie said:
My recollection is that the bolts for the gearbox are not evenly spaced, so it is not possible to rotate by one bolt space. You have to go to the position that is closest to where you want, and all bolts line up.
As roverrescue said, make sure the drain hole for the motor is at the bottom. The hole is a small slot in the end of the motor where it bolt to the winch frame. There are two diagonally opposite, but one is used to locate on a dowel pin in the winch frame - you need to make sure the dowel is at the top.
The winch is not water proof, so any water (from water crossings or condensation) has to be able to drain out. It is also a good idea to service the winch after deep water crossings, or power it in/out a few times to dry it out.
