If it's only 4th, the bearing between the mainshaft & input shaft might have given up the ghost.
When you select 4th, you're joining these shafts together (1:1 ratio) & the bearing failure can cause misalignment problems (hence selection problems).
Suddenly, after never having any issues at all with gear changes, my Tdi 130 has started crunching when asked to change into fourth. On the up change it can be made to go smoothly if you're slow and careful. Down changes are more difficult. It may or may not be relevant but: recently my clutch master cylinder played up and I had to drive home clutchless. Maybe I have done something to the gearbox. Or is there still a clutch problem - maybe the slave cylinder - although it does feel like it's taking up in the right place. Why only fourth?
I've always used MTF 94 in the gearbox.
Any ideas?

that also has some other minor symptoms.....
like whining in 3rd and 3rd gear becoming a little hit and miss.
check the oil. lots of brassy stuff means youve burred over the dogs on the baulk ring of the syncro unit silver metally flakes means a bearing.
the first you can deal with if you double clutch just right. the latter is doom for your box.

I know a bloke who will sell an R380 for a TDI for $300 in Brisbane.
I can provide his email if you require it. I don't know if it was out of a disco or defender though-nor does he. He says it is an LT77 from a V8 Disco.
...And these are the same bits along with what I strained out of the oil:
So what now? Am I doing further damage if I drive it? Or is the damage already done? The box feels and sounds normal apart from fourth which is difficult to engage, although if I double clutch and get it just right it slips in easily. What's happened in there?
I suspect that thats bearing metal....
pour a little petrol into the jar swirl it up to get rid of the oil and pour the lot out through a clean white rag.
you need to limit the amount of driving your doing with the thing or its going to die a horrid and expensive death.
check out the thread on Brians lt85 he had the same crud in the oil.
