    Wilsons Prom this weekend

    Hey crew,

My g/f and I are heading to the prom for 5 days as of tomorrow, staying at Tidal river. We're taking some garden worms, spinners and lures. We have some fairly lightweight rods, 2KG line.

Any tips? What are we likely to catch?

I hear there's mobile reception down there, so I'll report back with a catch report or two over the weekend.

    Cheers.

All methods of fishing (from the shore or at sea) are prohibited in Wilsons Promontory and Corner Inlet marine national parks. However, fishing is permitted in the marine parks.
Surf-fishing off Whisky Bay is popular.
Prob best to get onto parks Vic to check out where u can fish legally

Yep, aware of that, but the plan is for river fishing (which is allowed in most places), not sea fishing. There are always often special case restrictions, but the general rule is no fishing in a marine national park.

I'm quoting SWMBO so hopefully we don't get fined.

I think she actually rang Parks and asked. Plus, I imagine there will be someone (Eg Ranger) there we can ask.... We'll try not to get in trouble.

Well, as much as we had an enjoyable trip, the weather was less than enjoyable. We must have had 40-50mm of rain while we were there - camped with our tent. Fun fun.

River fishing was pointless - no fish or not biting. The Parks staff also said there was really no point in trying the rivers - no one catches anything. Since the major floods, the landscape has changed and the rivers are very shallow.

Beach fishing was the key, so we bought some pippies and squid, changed to a heavier rig and waded out as much as we could since we only had standard lightweight rods, not surf rods. Had a few bites but only ever managed to land 1 tiny mullet which lived to see another day. Most fishing excursions ended prematurely with lightening or heavy rain, so efforts were a little down on what I was hoping for...

If I had another opportunity, surf rods would be ideal, but standard rods are still OK if you don't mind wading. Don't bother with Tidal River Beach - it's very shallow for a long way out. The best opportunities were at Picnic Bay and Squeaky Beach where the beach gets deep quite quickly. We saw what looked like salmon riding some waves too which was promising, but I suspect we weren't getting far enough past the break with our rods to have a real chance of catching them.

Lastly, to clarify the discussion above, fishing is allowed everywhere except the marine NATIONAL park which doesn't start until south of the Tidal River camping area. That left us with more than enough options and not enough time to try them all.
