    Whilst fishing today........

I took the young fella (5) fishing today off the Derby jetty. It all started out well with a planned arrival of 1/2 an hour before high tide and a chance to catch some livies before the start of the run out. We manage to get a few young Catfish and a couple of young Mulloway. We started off with my young bloke little Shimano rod and reel spooled with 4kg braid and my old Shimano Technium set up with 20kg mono and a Mulloway for bait. Off the jetty we usually sit his rod in bracket i made on to his camping chair and my set up sits over the back of the chair. I had set up, baited and cast out, set the rods in to their appropriate positions and went off to set up a couple of hand lines. Whilst doing this i STUPIDLY had my back turned to the rods. Next thing I hear some other fellas nearby and my fella yelling out and carrying on. I turned around just in time to watch the whole shebang disappear over the side. By the time i got there the rods were well gone and my boy was beside himself. We all watched as a group to see the chair quickly disappear from view on the now rapidly changing tide.
The post mortem with the fellas around us was that whatever it was that took it all hit hard twice, then hooked up and ran with it. Taking the lot. Oh well the disappointment of the whole thing was i would've given my right burra to have landed whatever took it all. Oh well, at least it's a good excuse to get some more grouse gear for the high tide tomorrow, this time i won't take my eye off it.

    Cheers to all.

It tugged at the heart strings when the nut came off the spool my young bloke was using, never forget that look of utter despair and horror he had on is face when the nut fell into the drink.

    Better luck tomorrow.

Well, at least the jetty is still there for the next time!

A few years ago we saw someone fishing on the shore near the jetty, standing right at the water. I assume he survived to go off and do another stupid thing.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.

The funny thing is there have been some HUUUUUUGE Mulloway caught off the jetty this week. Which is something i thought might happen due to the tides and a couple of other things. So i'd like to think it was one of those big bloke's, the cannibalistic bastards. I've already prepared my next set of gear, 'cos I know tomorrow (my ample gut tells me) is going to be a much better day. Rods will be Ramset nailed to the jetty with a quick release to the link. That way there will be zero tears from the lad or for that matter myself.

To top it off the Wallabies got touched up. My cup runneth over with misery.

7 or 8 years ago I was in Derby & went & checked out the local boat ramp at low tide to see how I'd go with launching a 15' tinnie there the next day. It would have been OK for the launch except just I couldn't get rid of a mental picture I'd created of a "Swamp Gecko" or 2 hanging around the place. My rough, tough mate, who grew up with crocs outside Cairns in the 50's wouldn't even get out of the Disco!
    Would you launch here????

Yep. No problems at all. There is a fair sized lizard hanging around the jetty and ramps at the moment. He generally doesn't bother anyone, he even smiles for the tourists photos.
