150 kg Mako Shark Caught in the Parramatta River

Seems Sydney harbour is alive and well with an oceanic species being caught well upstream

150kg Mako shark caught in Sydney Harbour

I fish this area pretty regularly and often see large swirls and fins - mostly Bull Sharks in the warmer weather.

Have been also seeing large Kingfish well up near Ryde Bridge. I guess those old bloke tales of catching them up there was not all hot air.

It is pity the Bambi Brigade have been using social media to climb into the guys that caught this shark. They were fishing heavy for Mulloway in the deep holes near the Gladesville Bridge. They caught and landed it legally and dispatched it, cleaned it and distributed it amongst friends and family. I see nothing different to catching and eating a mullet.

The numbers of Mako's has stabilised in recent years (after some bad fisheries management practices where they got the lifespan wrong) and they were overfished. Although they aren't out of the just woods yet, I don't actually have a problem with eating the animal if it was too far gone to release it. I do however have a problem with cutting the fins off and then dumping the live torso back in the water to die a miserable death! Maybe they should be protesting that.....

Update on the Sydney Harbour Mako. Apparently the guys who caught it hooked it out near Brown's Mountain - 40 kilometres offshore and took the photos of it when they got back near the Gladesville Bridge. They did as a bit of joke they reckon but it took off in the media and now they are laying pretty low out of the media spotlight.

Who can believe a fisherman would tell a whopper????????
