How do you carry your rods on your car?

I do very little fishing, just a bit when I go to Fraser. We're going up there for a week soon. I'd only be carrying 1 or two rods at most. Thing is I bought a new beach rod recently and I'd like to keep it in good nick if possible.

Our car config is a Deefer with bull bar, and I run two roof rails with an awning on for a trip like this.

So any suggestions as to how to best secure the rod?

with no reel fitted i have been putting my surf rod inside the cover for my awaning with 2-3 feet hanging out the end, seems to work well

the kids ones broken in half and stored in the cargo area

i have a bullbar rod holder that i do not have fitted.....you are more than welcome to use it

Personally i would use a rod holder mounted horizontally on a roof rack at the rear with the tip of the rod tied down to the bullbar. Put it in the middle of the car and you shouldn't catch it on anything.

I should have added I would like to be able to leave the rod set up so as you pass the gutter you can just dive out and have a go. If you did have it in a rod holder at the front, how do you tie it down at the top?

If I take the gear off I have used a oky strap to tie it to the awning for transit.

Thanks for the offer! I'll see what other suggestions come in.

I should add that I use quite a heavy old sidecast Alvey.

once you are on the beach with the rod set up i just tilt the rod holder to a more vertical positon so that it doesn't hit the roof, no need to tie it in well more so no need to tie at the top

I have 2 lengths of storm water pipe under my roof bars. Screw on caps both ends so you can access from front or back. You can put them either under of above racks. Rhino make clamps for the above way, I had to modify some storm water c clamps for underneath. I used Disco racks so the canoes would not toch the roof and the rod holders and awning could sit under the racks. Cost about $15 each to make.

Mmmmm Surf fishing,ilove it

I have the rod holders on the left side of the bar.Angle them up so sinkers wont hit the roof,if you go over any bumps.The rods will not come out of the holders.If i am going over some bumpy tracks,i put an oky strap around the rods,where the reels are mounted....hard to explain,but also holds them more securely.
I used to have one roof rail that i used to rest the rods against,but dont use it anymore,as it is the sinker that hits the roof,not the rod.

My holder is a TJM.
