    chinese 4bdi

    Hey guys
Sorry about being so vague but a mate of mine told he thinks china is making the 4BD1 and are putting this motor into generators. has anyone heard of this,
When he gets to work tomorrow he will try and confirm this.
Should I ask him for pics and post them up to try and make a positive ID.
I ask this as I am considering up grading my TD5 to a 4BD1

    Cheers Wayne

I suspect that you will not be able to put an older motor into a newer chassis that came with a TD5 and still register it as the emission laws generally prevent you from doing this. Might be different with diesels but I suspect not as the TD5 is probably something like Euro 2 compliant and I doubt that the 4BDIT will have any sort of rating

    I think later 4BD1T's were euro 1.

As Slugburner says, before getting too excited about getting a 4BD1, I would first check to see if putting it in would be legal. As a general rule, you cannot go backwards on any ADRs, and the last Isuzu equipped Landrovers would have been 1990 or thereabouts. The change to the engine was the result of the introduction of the Defender, but the emissions ADR did not necessarily change then. You could be lucky, but I would certainly check when the ADRs changed.

Also note that as well as being compliant with the ADRs, you may have to prove it is compliant - which with a Chinese made engine may not be easy, as you would possibly have to prove it was identical to the Japanese made engine produced specially for JRA.

And yes, I have heard of Chinese made 4BD1s.

Have a look at this - I realise it's not Gospel, but it is a source...

European emission standards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don't think a TD5 would qualify for the 4BD1(T). These Chinese versions have numerous differences to the Isuzu models. I think they're a bit heavier too (if that's possible).
