Hi
I have been offered a 1988 Land Rover Single Cab Trayback (120inch I think or maybe a 130.)
Its an old farmer ute and needs some love. The engine is the non turbo Isuzu and the gearbox is a 5 speed. Its a factory conversion that was done in Moorebank, Sydney. It has powersteer and no aircon.
The engine was rebuilt 120,000k's ago and the crankshaft was replaced. I'm told the dealer who services it didn't put enough oil in it and it ran dry and spun a bearing. It seems to run like clockwork.
The front wings have been dinged a little bit (not too bad) and the flares have gone to a funny speckly black colour.
The rear tray is stuffed and needs replacment. The gearbox needs a set of bearings as it is noisy and the front axle needs shimming in the king pins.
The door hinges are a bit ratty and need repinning or replacment and the drivers doorcard needs replacment.
All in all apart from the tray and the gearbox its in ok nick and just needs some love. There is no rust to speak of that I can see, the bonnet is peeling a bit, the firewall seems good, the chassis seems good.
Now I have the Mongol, an early 1984 110 with a P76 V8 and a four speed which I have been fixing up. It needs a firewall and I would like to replace the chassis and now this thing has been offered to me I am wondering if I should scrap the mongol project and jump into the Isuzu.
I have a tray, and most of the bits I need to tidy the Isuzu up.
The price is $2500. Is this too much considering the box needs a rebuild?
I'd love to hear some comments on what a truck in this condition is really worth?
Cheers
Rich

absolute bargain - people will tell you to replace the LT85 transmission - too expensive to rebuild - but at that price who cares?
If you don't want it or have any doubts please pm the tel no to me - I'll buy it
If it is in Ok driveable condition I would say that price is value for money but you can always offer a little less. The motor alone is worth $2000 with the rover adaptors etc if it's in good condition. You can always use a RR or 110 4 speed box as they will bolt straight onto that motor if you can find an Isuzu bellhousing.

thanks bearman, dropping the price a little is what i was thinking also. Is the 5 speed that bad or is an unfounded reputation? Sometimes people just say things are its reputation is then stuck when in reality its not all that bad. I only had it in first and reverse as it is currently out of reg and am only going on advice from the seller.
There's a 110 Isuzu County on ebay at the moment with a stuffed gearbox, it has front and rear maxi drive axles, starting price at $3,000.00 no reserve by the looks of it.
could be a good buy![]()
If its done about 300K I would expect the 5 speed to be in need of some work. Behind the Isuzu they cop a bit of a beating. At least bearings and synchros, at worst gears and mainshaft and transfer input gear. Give it a spin somewhere where you can go through all the gears, get it up to speed and check for any abnormal noises, backlash on the mainshaft and worn synchros/clashing gears. Question the owner about any work done on it. It could be a good one that's been treated gently and still in ok condition but the odds are against it.
Cheers......Brian

And so considering it needs bearings and syncros, what would that cost in around about figures.
