Sump depth different on winged sump?

Went to fit the truck sump to my engine tonight, and found that its about 15mm shallower than the winged sump, and the oil pump pickup is hard against the bottom - ie cant get the bolts in both sides of the sump at once:-(

Before I give it a gentle panel beating to create a bit more depth for the pickup, is there anything I'm missing? Are the landy and truck pickups actually different or something?

    Fitted now..
Possibly the sump I got from the wreckers was a bit flatter than normal from sitting on the ground.

FWIW - I had a look in the Isuzu parts breakdown, and it does list a couple of different P/N's for the pickup. Only the one picture though, so doesn't give any clue as to what the differences (if any) might be.

    Steve,

The manual lists 2 pumps, a trochioid type for a 4BD1 and a gear type for a 4BD1T. Both show oil strainers that are different to mine (see photos below). I've got a 4BD1 wingless sump and a 4BD1-T dipstick to fit to my (originally) N/A engine.

I didn't have trouble fitting a wingless sump to replace my winged one, but I did notice the dipsticks were of different length, indicating the oil pickup for the two pumps may have been at a different height. I suspect you have a 4BD1-T sump, which may be a different depth to the N/A version. Does it have a tube welded at the deep RH end of the sump for a crankcase breather oil return?

Two dipsticks side by side (top 4BD1, bottom 4BD1-T)

    Length difference close-up

    4BD1 (winged sump) dipstick position

    4BD1-T (wingless sump) dipstick position

I ended up extending the 4BD1-T dipstick so that it protrudes to the same extent as the 4BD1 did. Hope that helps. BTW, the engine is factory fitted to an 1984 120.

    Cheers

Thanks - great photos and explanation. Your pickup is the same as mine (from a Stage1 Isuzu).

Maybe the higher oil level in the sump is due to the different pickup as you've suggested, but could it possibly be because the winged sump has much more volume, so doesn't need a high oil level to get a decent amount of oil in the system?
How much oil does yours take with the longer dipstick and the wingless sump fitted?
My wingless sump doesn't have a oil return tube welded to it (but might actually be a good idea for my provent return line). Hmmm.....

Pretty sure I've worked out what is going on with the sump.

    Its not from a 4BD1

Its the same flange, but its about 10-15mm shallower ALL OVER which explains the oil pickup clearance problem, but the real issue is.....the crank wont turn !!!!!!

I'm guessing that its from another smaller capacity Isuzu, and the wrecker I bought it off either hasn't realised, or knew it was different but thought that it would fit. Grrrrr.

Just glad I found it while turning it over by hand tonight rather than when it was being cranked on the starter.

If anyone has a 4BD1 wingless sump that they could measure from the lower face of the block to the bottom of the shallow forward section I'd be very grateful. Mine is around 30mm, but the original winged one is about 45mm and also has 2 depressions presumably where the #1 and #2 conrods sweep.
I'd also like to know if the wingless sump has those depressions. I want to make sure the next one I get is the right one.

    Hi Steve,

In another thread somewhere you mentioned that you filled a dry sump/engine with 8L, ran the engine, then marked that on the NA dip stick. Can you tell me the measurement from NA "full" marker to your new "full" marker?

I spent the time to precisely measure 8L, only to leave a lake on the ground when I turned the key. Now I have no idea how much oil is in there!

Here's a photo. Correct oil level (8L) is at the notch above the normal level holes.
Bear in mind that mine is a cut-n-shut sump, so will be different capacity to yours. As long as its sitting a bit above the old marks you'll be fine and then you can have another crack at setting it next time you do an oil change.

The measurement is around 40 mm.
This is from a 1990 4bd1 truck engine.
Measurement taken RHS half way along the shallow front section.

    Mocky.
