Body lift required for Isuzu 3.9 in Disco 1?

I'm collecting everything to put a 3.9 Isuzu into a Discovery 1 next year. It looks like this has been done in Defenders and Range Rovers more often. I notice that in RR's it seems like a body lift has been necessary. From measuring, it seems to me that the Isuzu should fit under the Disco hood/bonnet without a body lift, but will require lengthened bump stops for the pan. I will be running OME 110 extra heavy duty springs in front and Disco/RR extra heavy duty springs in the rear. (3 inch/76mm lift) Feedback on this?

    Thanks,

    David

David, My RRC had a 3" BL before I bought it, the 4BD1 fits really easily, but yes I reckon it'd be a squeeze but fit without one. If you could get away with 1" lift it would help for sure.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    G'day.

I've been doing this conversion for a while now and it's gotta be finished by January 1st 2011....by Order of the Ministry.

Anyway, mines a 4BD1-T with an Isuzu gearbox/LT-230 and the Isuzu box requires a body lift. I'm not a fan of body lifts (for what I do) and I went with a 2.5 inch kit.

In hindsight it's been a good move allowing extra clearance under the bonnet and for the 3" exhaust I've routed along the chassis rail.

If you need any pic's let me know. The body is off the chassis at the moment which again makes the work a hell of a lot easier.

    All the best,

    Matt.

So, it's the size of the Isuzu gearbox that requires the body lift, not the height of the motor, correct? I'll be using a GM NV4500 5 speed for my conversion, so potentially that won't be a problem.

I've got no body lift in my 85 RRC. But I do have longer front bump-stops and the gearbox is very close to the body.
My gearbox has been shaved and a different selector mechanism fitted. Without this a body lift would be needed.

Did you use the Isuzu gearbox as well? Also, how did you deal with the starter clearance? Any one fit the factory Isuzu air conditioning compressor below the alternator on a Rover?

Yes I have the Isuzu gearbox, but the gear selection mechanism is completely different to factory and gives another inch or two of clearance above the box. I run the compact starter shown in the MSA gearbox thread and the Isuzu air-conditioning compressor. The chassis rail is notched at a 45 deg angle to clear the starter solenoid.

I have a 4BD1T fitted to my Defender - we used genuine Landrover parts throughout - the aircon compressor is below the alternator and fits very well - it was very easy to plumb in to the existing aircon
