Fitting a snorkel via a Donaldson air cleaner

    Hey guys,

What is the general view of what to do with the dump valve on the Donaldson air cleaner when fitting a snorkel? Does it need to be blocked off?

The rubber 'lips' always seem to tear on mine. Is there any danger of sucking water in through here?

    Cheers
    Nick

Sorry I don't know about fitting the snorkel but the rubber lips tearing means you don't have the right valve. The isuzu needs a special one that is stronger. I don't have the part no. right now maybe some one else can supply it.

There is a truck parts place on the South Gippy highway in Dandenong South -just before the freeway underpass that sells them for about $7.
They are definately bigger than the V8 one. I'm not sure about removing them, the snorkel fitting instructions are'nt much help.

The "duck bills" as they are called are cheap and designed to close in use. You could buy a few and replace them regularly. However Gerry ( 1103.9D ) has fitted a glass bottle instead of the duck bill - which allows him to check for debris or water and clean as needed. Personally I like his idea and will do similar.

I was just chatting to IsuzuBob about it.

I reckon it's too risky to rely on the "duck bill" to properly seal. If you go to the trouble of fitting a snorkel and making the whole thing watertight there's no point in having this weak link.

I think if you can block it off but still allow water to drain through then that is the best. I'm not sure of the best way to do it though.

What you are calling a water drain, is actually for expelling dust that is pre-cleaned from the air before the filter element.

The inlet air is caused to rotate by the vanes on the outside of the element. The cyclonic motion that this creates, causes the dust particles (being heavier) to go to the outside of the casing, while the air proceeds to bend and pass through the filter element.

Gravity causes the pre-cleaned dust particles to accumulate in the low part and the pressure opens the duck bill so the dust is ejected. If you are going slow during a water crossing, the pressure is supposed to not be high enough to open the duck bill and allow water to enter.

If the duck bill is blocked off, or is prevented from opening, you will have to manually remove the dust from the casing. This will be quite often if conditions are dusty.

If the duck bill is damaged and not closing at low pressure it can allow water to enter.

Thanks Ben, but don't go for glass, use a 'baby bottle' as I did, they're tough, can handle high temps, wont shatter, and are transparent so you know when to clean them.
