    Fitment of PTO Winch to Perentie

    I'm finally getting around to fitting the winch to my Perentie and have a couple of questions regarding the fitment of the PTO shafts.

    I've done a search on the forum and found quite a bit if useful information that will assist with the winch installation but my questions relate to a few inconsistencies in information I've come across from a number of sources;

    1) I need to make up both the chassis/shaft bearing mount brackets and am trying to determine the correct orientation of the drop block towards the front of the shaft. The Army workshop manual and Repair Parts Scale both show the drop block fitted with the machined (flat) face towards the winch. Refer to the attached diangrams.

    However, the drop block is fitted on my PTO shaft the opposite way around with the machined face on the PTO side. This is also the way it is fitted in a photo I found on the forum (I think was posted by 110RAR some time ago);

    Does anyone know which is the correct orientation? My preference would be the way it's fitted in the above photo as it locates the bearing closer to the end of the shaft.

    2) My engine is presently fitted with a 'winged' sump. Has anyone had any experience with the winged sump and PTO shaft clearences? I do have a 'wingless' sump which I plan to fit in the event that the shaft doesn't fit past the winged sump but that leads me onto my third question;

    3) Is a 'wingless' sump directly interchangable with a 'winged' sump without requiring modification or changing the oil pump/pickup strainer?

    Thanks in advance.

    No changes required to the pickup/strainer AFAIK.

    You may have already seen the thread I posted a while back with my sump problem going to wingless. Turned out the sump I got wasn't actually from a 4bd1 - probably from a smaller capacity 4b engine.

    There are some useful photos in the thread regarding different oil levels between the two sumps. Only other thing to note is that there are a couple of different gasket/seal arrangements on the sumps.

    Ian,

    3.) The winged /wingless sump are directly interchangeable, however the dipstick oil mark location is different. I.e. a winged sump dipsticl mark is close to an inch above that of the wingless sump.

    I have posted photos of the differences, albeit (IMHO) with wrong conclusions. - Rather than extending the 4BD1-T dipstick as I did, I think I should have left it unchanged. With the dipstick extended, the wingless sumped engine only takes about 6L of oil - should be closer to 8 from memory. I usually "overfill" mine (eventually I will shorten the dipstick to its original position).

    1.) As to the PTO, I may be able to dig up some photos of my shafts and bearing locations. I've recently moved to Adelaide (from Perth) and all my stuff is still in storage - Hopefully I have some photos on a portable hard drive - alternatively, I may have posted some on here already.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the information guys.
    I checked the part number on the 'wingless' sump last night and it matches the one in the RPS so should be correct for the 4BD1. Thanks for the information regarding the dipstick differences, will need to keep that in mind if I change the sump.

    I'll leave the front drop block the way it is at the moment and make up the front mounting bracket to suit when everything else is installed to make sure it all lines up.

    I finished fitting the PTO, winch and shafts to the 110 on the weeknd. All seems to work well. I just need to run the cable onto the drum.

    The shaft clears the "winged" sump by around 20mm so I'll be leaving that sump on for now.
