    LT85 questions

Just when you think you've got it sorted, I have purchased a second hand 1987 110 tray back with isuzu its pretty much factory so its not running big tyres or turbo's it does however have a half dead gearbox.

Talked to the major wreckers in Australia and was told they had a LT85 and could send me one no worries. Take about a week to procrastinate ring them up to do the deed and promptly get told the LT85 is a 4 speed and the five speed gearbox from a V8 will not fit the Isuzu as it has a different input shaft length. They do offer a bearing kit for the box for a reasonable amount of money but I'm doing the time, buying bearing pullers and shop press calculations vs paying someone who actually knows what they are doing.

So I ring a local landrover specialist and they repeat the thing about the input shaft then say they can rebuild the gearbox but quote me a price that makes an Isuzu truck gearbox conversion look cheap. I'm guessing there is a we really don't want to do it factor in there.

Someone want to clear up what fits what? this is a factory Isuzu rather than a conversion. Suggest someone prepared to do a gearbox rebuild in Perth.

I don't know if I would trust anyone in WA to do it properly, nor would I trust a 2nd hand box (Btw - I am sure you can fit your bellhousing and or other bits to a V8 LT85).

A proper rebuild is not cheap if major parts like the mainshaft need replacing.
My LT85 was rebuilt by Mal Story of Maxi-Drive (at the PO's expense fortunately) - $4500.

If you wish to go down the rebuild path, I would ask Brian (Bearman) nicely if he is willing to do it. I believe he has done a few in the past, and may even have one he is building at present.

I'm not planning on turning this thing into a cross country tourer, you think you can use a V8 gearbox or you know? Its just two landrover specialists have told me expressly otherwise. Probably end up doing it myself at this rate.

The input shaft part number is the same for both the Isuzu LT85 & the V8 LT85. If you can source a V8 lt85 you simply retain your bellhousing.
Maybe shipping one out from Ashcroft?

Id say your local so called specialist is trying to shaft you with shaft lengths as there all the same V8 and isuzu

One option is to use your LT85 bell housing to adapt a R380 to fit up this would be the better option if a 5 speed was realy needed .

My prefrence would be to source a LT95 box for an isuzu or just the bell housing then find a late rangie LT95 with the .996 to 1 high range and fit that .
Tho if you want the bullet proof stump pulling option go for the grub conversion and fit the isuzu truck box .

ALL Santana (LT85) transmissions, there are 2 versions, and the LT95 were originally designed for V8's, the ONLY difference between Isuzu and V8 instalations is the bellhousing.

What he said. Isuzu diesel landies were basically V8 landies shipped from the UK in kit form without an engine or bellhousing. The rest was done here.

Cheers for the responses thats what I thought from info from this site but I was figuring the specialists would know. Ascroft is looking pretty attractive with current exchange rates even if I have to pay shipping a duties.

I've never dealt with Ashcroft myself, but a mate got an Lt230 shipped over this week and said they were very pleasant to deal with. The box landed in Aus in about a week from ordering. I'm not sure what the total cost was, but he says it was cheaper than buying or rebuilding here.

My experience with them was positive, very professional & sold me parts at the same price as other companies over there, even though there was no listing on thier website ( must have been meant for rebuilds) thus saving me freight costs.
