No clutch adjustment - most likely the hydraulic clutch operation is a bit dodgy. Check fluid level, top up as necessary and bleed, but expect to have to replace the clutch slave cylinder and/or slave cylinder. Neither is particularly expensive or difficult. Unlike the later Defenders, a worn clutch release fork is unlikely. Just as a precaution, please ensure that there is (the correct) oil in the gearbox - lack of that could also cause these symptoms - and that is likely to be expensive!
There is a possibility that the symptoms are caused by oil on the clutch, although slipping is a more likely symptom. The oil will be from either (or both) the rear engine seal or the gearbox oil pump. In either case parts are not expensive (but the new clutch is, relatively), but there is a lot of labour involved, which will be expensive if you are paying someone to do it. Check for this by removing the wading plug on the flywheel housing (if fitted). If you get covered in oil, this is likely to be the problem.
But to go back to my first sentence - it is probably the hydraulics.
