Certainly is a project and a half. Keep us updated on the build and the trips.
I Posted pics of my County back in Dec 09 if you want to see where I am starting from. Forum won't allow me to post them here again
Attached is a list of what I hope to achieve ( and or get done by others ) over the next 12 months
Wish me luck and feel free to offer advice and comment
Let the fun begin

Certainly is a project and a half. Keep us updated on the build and the trips.
Good luck, what's the plan with the brakes and booster?
Thanks Guys
Abb. Brakes are probaby ok as is. New cam adjusters etc just fitted to rears recently . New fr rotors about 3 years ago and new pads in Late 09.I have read through quite a few of the AULRO 110 and Isuzu posts that mention a disc upgrade to the rear using a complete Defender rear hub to hub arrangement ( I think )
I mentioned the disc conversion to someone who is fairly 4WD and car savvy and in fact races cars. He queried if the expense was worth it.
Hence my post on here about the benefits.
The jury still seemed to be out regarding any significant improvement given the costs
I don't mind spending the $ if it's necessary. This will be our 4WD tourer , tow tug etc at least for another 15 years.
I would like to have most of it done by Jan long weekend next year and finished off by June 31 , 2012.
Given that we were thinking of buying something relatively new and copping a huge depreciation over the next few years I'd rather put those $ into something very capable , reliable and not technically complex.
We have plans to do the CSR over the next couple of years and if we're fortunate enough , in say 5-10 years we would like to emulate the LROCV crew who did the Russia/ Trans Siberian Railway trip a couple of years back.
This build up was my Plan A back in late 09.
I think I have a good base from which to start. A full and comprehensive check is first on the agenda
Pete
There's a few posts out there suggesting an upgrade to Defender brake booster improves braking noticeably.
Even without a disc conversion to rear end![]()
Pete,
Looks like you will be busy
I'd shop around on opinions on the poly bushes. I used red ones & the ride was quite harsh. I ripped a shocker off up in Qld Daintree track & am fairly convinced the poly bushes helped with that..
Pete - sounds like what you want to achieve is similar to what I did.
Here are my threads in case they are of interest:

A couple of questions/comments though:
The ONLY polybushes I would fit are superpro. I found out the hard way that most rubber bushes these days are rubbish, and plenty have found out that stiff poly bushes break your suspension.
Maybe I misread, but you seem to plan on removing galvanised rims, having them sandblasted and painted??? You can paint or powdercoat straight over the top of gal rims. After having galvanised rims I wouldn't want anything else.
Rover front axles are prone to bending with an isusu fitted. I would seriously consider laminating it.
Personally (after having to change disc pads "in the field") - the disc conversion is definitely worthwhile.
I would try and do as much as possible yourself. You never know what will fail in the middle of nowhere with only you around to fix it. Although on the CSR most of our party didn't have much trouble - except for the RRC in o0ur party - which was fortunately close enough to a 110 that I could fix everything.
Let us know when you are heading to russia if you want someone to tag along!!! We have done central america in an isuzu landie with Dave_S, and are keen to do africa, sth america, mongolia and russia some time in the future. We did the CSR mid last year but would not object to doing it again.
Btw - here is my canning report:

I was preping mine for a future trip, Cape york, Kimberely's then the trans siberian highway all solo, but alas, pregnant partner might see that being put off for the next 20-25 years![]()
