    Wastegate/ Actuator Advice Please

Hey All, I'm a little bit confused ref operation of the waste gate on my T25/T28 turbo.

I understand that most people on here are disabling the actuator. What is actually happening inside the turbo when you do this i.e. vulnerable to over spooling at high rpm?

And how do you actually go about disabling the waste gate? Is it simply a matter of replacing the actuator with a length of (say) threaded rod to keep the waste gate shut? Or perhaps disconnecting the vacuum hose to the actuator?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers Joe

    G'day Joe
I fitted a boost controller to the hose going to the actuator. So now little if any boost reaches the actuator. It maxes out just under 20 psi.

There's no risk of overspeeding a 60mm T28 compressor on our engines, it's possible to overspeed the 52mm T25 compressor by blocking the wastegate and running high boost at high rpm. But I've done that and got away without damage so it's not a guaranteed failure.

A very soft actuator won't be able to hold boost even with a regulator on it or the line blocked off. My current turbo had a very weak wastegate can and the spring was too soft to give 20psi. I took it off and used a long cap-screw through the same bracket to hold it shut.

    What Dougal said.

The actuator on my GT28 was only made for ~10 psi or so, so I couldn't get more than ~11 psi before the wastegate opened.

I initially just wired my wastegate shut to see what would happen. I still haven't gotten around to replacing the wire with something more permanent...
