won't be the rings, mate.......this isn't a mitsubishi. The Isuzu 4BD1 is NOT an alloy piece of crap that every time it gets hot the rings loose tension. This is a REAL motor. You can't kill it.
Been lots of posts on breather problems
Spent some time with the mechaninc going over the 4bd1 yesterday thinking about my oil leak. I gave it a half arsed touch with the high pressure hose then took it for a run. The verdict was that the oil seems to be smeared down the the block from top to bottom and doesn't seem to be dripping out the bottom of the box or bell housing.
So we are not thinking rear main seal at the moment. the breather seems to be throwing a fair bit of junk out of it and it may have a little leak at the rocker cover? so! Im giong to spend the arfternoon being a filthy deisel dog and degreasing wire brushing and high pressure washing the shizer out of it.THEN im going to wire a bottle under the breather and take it for a barrel up the freeway and see whats there in the bottle, nicley cleaned block and box!
Lets hope all indicationds don't point anywhere near the rings!!!! any advice on leak problems or detecting are more than welcome![]()

True true! I will trawl through some breather posts.
Surprisingly, that was a very satisfying job. A horrible filthy wet greasy slaves job, but a very satisfying one none the less. I got to the point where I had a pack of green scourers and polished the sump and all round the bell housing. she's spick and span right now for the first time ever and it feels good!
I even gave the airbox a lick of paint while I had it out![]()
now your rails and rear cross member will start to rust![]()
Took the truck for a blast down the freeway today. Approx 2 hrs of driving at 100km p/hr with the clear bottle over the breath pipe.
There was a faint black mist in the bottle and a few small granuels of crud in the bottom but nothing to raise my eyebrows. The box and engine block remain clean as a whistle.
The engine was over filled with oil last change and I'm thinking it may have preasurised and blown some stuff out the breather causing me to cry leak. I will keep monitoring it, but I'm feeling confident I just had a truck that had not been touched underneath for many years and was just generally filthy. we'll see how it goes!
