The seals are just a labyrinth, very similar to a piston ring but picture the piston turning as the shaft.
They can't actually blow or fail unless the shaft bearings pack up, but if they fill up with oil they will take a while to clear.

If it was me, the next thing I'd do would be to T a piece of clear hose into the drain, and hold it up vertically. If you've still got a drainage issue then you are going to see the hose filling up.

If you haven't, then since you've got no leakage on the compressor side just put it all together and take it for a drive and see what its like after a bit of a run when everything has a chance to settle down and the oil's hot etc.

    What dougal said!
I had same problem both turbine and compressor side on brand new turbo that was about 6 years old and laying around and I found it was by starting it up without properly checking shaft play I thought it was the normal amount of play for a bush turbo but all it needed was a pull down and adjustment while I was at it I put a new bush and seal kit in it and adjusted correctly and woola

Ok so I fitted a 15mm return line into the oil pump cover. No oil leakage!!! Other than a tad initially coming from the between the exhaust house and compressor housing. I ran it for a good hour. Sounds like a semi!! Not game enough to drive it on the road with only a 3in dump pipe. Having said that, it didn't stop me from doing multiple runs up and down my street haha!

Next thing to do is finish the plumbing at this stage charged air plumbing is only temporary. Have been convinced to fit an intercooler. Thinking of utilizing the left side fender breather panel (on top of fender panel) and fabricating a external scoop (Sutle design) to direct ram air to the ic which will be positioned where the oem ac unit once was. I figure with this setup the compressor will flow directly into the ic and onto the inlet plenum.

Will show some pics if this idea of mine eventuates!!!

    It's almost officially a 4BD1-T!!!

Thanks to all for the advice.

    Cheers Joe
