sure, thats fine for short durations, I wouldnt recommend it for sustained running, you'll take out the top land on the pots.

why?

drop sump, pull head undo big ends pull piston, remove sleeves insert 4 more and away you go again.

untill you push out past 50psi its normally the pistons that go and take out the sleeve and the rod.

Because fitting an engine I have here will cost an oil change

I'd say let me have one of the engines after you kill it so I can rebuild it..

But I'd like to get my hands on one before my grandchilderen are in graves.

Once you've done that, fit some Alfin pistons with steel top ring lands and that will never bother you again.

be interesting to see the next failure method after fitting them, especially if you when the whole hog and got the cast crown units....

My best guess with the stock turbo type pistons (alloy with steel inserts) would be the piston crown softening, expanding and scuffing the bores. I reckon sustained 900C EGT's might do it.:angel:

Dougal you mention alfin pistons would you still run standard sleeves if lets say you was to "work" the engine?

Yes. I wouldn't run anything except the chromard type factory cylinder liners.
