my rough and ready rulings for turbo playing on the suzi...

max boost is about 40 (if you really need that much power) and pre turbo EGT can be run at a sustained 650 degrees if you have the factory 4bd1-t

if you have the stock 4bd1 15psi and pre turbo EGT of about 500.

your mileage will vary but so far people modded and running under those numbers seem to be doing well. I personally do not recommend diesel gas systems. There is no denying that setup properly they work well (even poorly setup ones give some advantage) but I have issues with the overall long term longevity of the engine.

I was given the same cautionary advice not to fit a turbo. There's no risk in advising someone against fitting one but risk in advising to fit a turbo. I now run without the wastegate and so boost reaches about 19 psi. I've had mine set up for over 3 years without any sign of a problem even though I've reached some scary EGTs.

I would fit an EGT when fitting the turbo.

I know the guys on here who have retrofitted turbos to their 4bd1's are more than happy but my concern is that the factory turbo has oil squirters under the pistons to assist with cooling and the NA does not.

As I intend to use mine outback and towing I don 't want an overheating issue.............
As nice as it is to have oil squirters, just remember that these Isuzu engines are originally designed for heavy trucks that work all day, not a 2.5t 4WD, so they really aren't a necessity for what we do.
For example, my engine came from a 7000GVM truck, so in theory, at factory specs for the 4BD1T, it could actually see a situation where it's driven continuously at full throttle with 13.8psi boost and 750*EGT...........and that's pulling 7 ton.
These engines generally run pretty cool. As long as you set things up properly when fitting a turbo, overheating is not an issue as far as the engine itself is concerned.

As I indicated above, these are not your average 4WD vehicle engine. The standard N/A 4BD1 is built to deal with heavy duty uses off the shelf. They are easily capable of handling a retrofitted turbo. There are few differences between the N/A and Turbo versions.

    You wild child Matt

Make sure you keep an accurate record of when you fitted it, so in 20 years time when the first one dies you can tell any of us that are still alive how many K's it did (so the tentative among us can plan for a turbo install knowing that its safe ).

I wonder if you Nervous Nellies should really own an Isuzu. It's a rugged motor built into a rugged 4x4.....not for the faint hearted!!!

Better sell them to me so you don't lose any sleep at night worrying about them.

I think we need some stories of failure. Seems to me that there are lots of turbos on 4BD1s and not very many stories of them blowing up.

I can't think of any on the forum, maybe one or two turbos blown due to high EGT (intentional or known-risk) silliness.

I want to run 750C but I think I'd need to fit a external wastegate to keep the turbo at 30psi and the fact my things to do list is huge, it'll be 20years by the time I do
