I've run the range of adjustment on my engine, I'm back to the factory marks as the best overall. I haven't checked how many degrees this is.

More advanced made the engine noisier, lowered EGT slightly and delayed turbo spoolup. It gave noticably more kick at low rpm.
More retarded made it smoother, quieter, gave turbo spool up sooner but was a little soggier down low.

    It's all a tradeoff.

Thanks guys well I was just wondering because as I have said before I got the spill timing done on my 200tdi and it gave it way more down low which being a little engine they need as much as they can get.. Made it "feel" like it was spooling up faster but from what your saying it spools up slower if it makes it hav more down low but takes longer for boost to come on does it affect the top end power or all mainly to do with bottom end ? I did notice it changed the noise of the 200tdi made the thing start sounding half like a real diesel should

Certainly a quiet Tdi is a retarded Tdi. They should 'crack' when the throttle is blipped. They are a sweet little engine when 'tuned' right

That is correct ! They go well once tuned but the 4bd1t walks all over a tdi I am starting to think don't know about a td5 running all the goods such as chip, exhaust, intercooler, upgraded turbo etc etc etc ?

I think this is where the saying "there is no substitute for cubic inches" applies. All things being equal the 4bd1t has it on capacity alone, then you can wind the boost up higher as well which effectively increases the cubes yet again.

Then again you have to contend with the torque pulses destroying gearboxes and shaking your car apart.
