    120 helpful advise required

    Hi all
about a month ago I bought a 120 isuzu off Ebay, it was not without its issues but Murray the chap that was selling it seem to be a really honest chap. He pointed out many of it's failings as well as it good points. So I bought it(picture to come tomorrow) the front bearing in the LT85 he explained needed replacing as did the rear seal as the hand brake drum was covered in oil. So to start things off are there better quality front imput/pinion bearings either brand or type, normal as opposed to tappered. Also are the any other seals that are worth doing now that the box is out of the car. The the Imput shaft into the crank seems pretty reasonable with a slight tapering of the spline in the middle. So hope you can help us, also does the bell housing have to be removed to change the bearing and are there any little tricks that make life easy with replacing seals and bearings.

    Kindest regards Garry

    Hi Garry,
I don't think tapered bearings would be suitable. I recently made a (it seems) a really good LT85 out of two gearboxes with collapsed front bearings. I purchased the pinion, seals & some roller bearings off LR Series & a Master rebuild kit off Ashcroft ( both in England)

Ashcroft Transmissions - LT85 Master Rebuild Kit

In hindsight I would look closely at the 1-2 gear selector as these apparently wear prematurely.

I would recommend you take heaps of photo's while you strip it down & then go online & purchase the replacement parts for the worn out bits. I would also replace the plastic oil pump with a steel one.
Freight was 50 pounds for the LR Series purchase & 75 quid for the Ashcroft parts, I sourced a primary shaft off one & mainshaft off the other so there was a fair bit of weight.
Both deliveries were here within the week

Did you get parts from different sources due to availability? or quality/reputation?

Parts availability is pretty reasonable for the LT85, I thought the Ashcroft parts would be good quality as they do thier own rebuilds but they dont really "drill down" to the smaller bit's n pieces.
I would have got the primary shaft off Ashcroft but at the time, was going to re use the original shaft.

    Garry,
Depends what you call easy . Not hard though, you need a good memory. Whatever you do, don't dismantle the gear lever assembly, the fibre collar/ oil seal costs a fortune and you will almost certainly damage it in the process. Just remove the top plate c/w the gear lever.

Ok that sounds good advice, have had an interesting day thought I would see about sourcing parts locally. But no luck the imput bearing is an odd size 92mmX40mm and it seems that the bearing manufacturer has now deleted this bearing from its catalogue. So watch out county owners in the future this part will now become scarce. Ashcroft have them available you can land in Oz a set of 5 bearings and a gasket and seal kit for around $207 Aust'n. Went to Land rover dealer they said $250 for the front imput bearing and a least 2 weeks wait, that was for just the one bearing no seals or gaskets. It no wonder that Toyota has the edge in this county.
