I hear what you guys are saying about emissions and taxes, but surely a 2.5 Diesel is just a touch too small for the Defender? Nissan uses the 3L Grenade, Toy uses 4L plus engines, Mitsu uses a 3.2TDi, Mazda has large capacity TDi motors. Are none of those vehicles available in the EU?

Absolutely make the engines and transmissions common and optional throughout the range.
However when you talk to LRA and people in the know at JLR UK it seems that they want their engines in particular to be exclusive and related to the status of the model. i.e. the L322 and RRS will be the only models to get the supercharged V8 petrol likewise the TDV8, the D4 gets the TDV6 while Defender gets the 4cyl Puma diesel.
Why can't someone who wants the size of a D4 be able to option the TDV8 to tow their 36' caravan while doing the big lap. Similarly the Defender get the TDV6 or TDV8, but as I said before the bigger the capacity, the greater the CO2 output over greater numbers of cars and they get punished by EU enviro laws.
Yes but Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan and Mazda manufacture and sell thousands of small shopping cart sized cars to offset the CO2 outputs of the larger vehicles.Quote:

AFAIK, if it's not a proven high mileage unit, it's no good. Nissan is starting to get problems with the YD25, even down-tuning the ECU on the sly from what I've heard so that they don't start drowning in warranty returns.
As was mentioned above: offering a bigger TDi engine with one of the existing auto boxes is possible from the current line-up (TDv6, TDV8) and hardly a major re-engineering effort. Some guys on this forum would do that in their sheds on the farm......
Didn't think about the emition laws that's a good point :o its all a load of crap the sooner they relise it isn't making the world better the better everyone will be :) LR don't make the tdv8 3.6 now due to the 3.0 tdv6 making almost the same output for less emitions but now have the tdv8 4.4L... Dougal that's alot of power but ill say something that sounds like something you would say and that is "i still know which one I would prefer" :)
You can make small very efficient engines to the job of much larger engines, but to do it the engines are running under stress at or close to their limits. Using a larger engine particularly when it's made more efficient, means that it doesn't need to work close to it's limits and from that should be more reliable over a longer lifespan.
Isn't that why we like the 4BD1 and particularly the 4BD1-T?
Good point! If you take a look at the navaras d22 and d40 both 2.5ltr but the d40 is 30kw more :o
I think (marketing reasons aside, the most expensive ute has to go the hardest) the gearbox is a big factor there. The old 5 speed in the D22 can't be as strong as the 6 speed in the D40.Quote:
