    4BD1 scratchy whine noise

    Hi guys,

While driving home from Jindabyne on sunday night the county started making a scratchy type of whining noise. The noise happens anytime the accelerator is pushed ( both in and out of gear) but is most noticable while driving. I'm having trouble trying to pin point the noise. It is quite loud. I have stopped driving the car and have it booked in to go see the guys at Opposite Lock on tuesday but I really need to drive it on the weekend (only car).

I know this will be basically impossible to diagnose without hearing it, but any ideas as to what it could be?

Does the sound change with revs, is it constant or is it only linked to accelerator pedal movement? Checked your fan blades and belts for damage or obstructions? Aircon compressor and alternator? Shoot some WD40 etc on the accelerator pedal's pivot if it is pedal motion related.

Wedge a brick/shoe on the accelerator when not in gear if its constant but only above idle so you can pin point the sound easier.

Could it be a slipping alternator / AC compressor belt?

Does it only happen while the engine speed is changing (especially accelerating)?

Does it also happen when the car is stationary - in neutral, with engine revving up?

drop the fan belt off and run it, if its still there it could be

    the timing gears
    the clutch
the front bearings in the box.
power steering pump if you have to timing gear driven one.
the auto advance unit on the IP

if its not there with the belt off but comes back when you put it on it could be
    water pump bearing
    alternator
    AC compressor
    front balancer

once youve got it sussed that far its now a simple case of putting a mechanics stethescope onto the sus component and then having a listen.

Check your engine mounts, it is possible one of them is broken and the noise is the fan touching the radiator shroud when it flexes under load. If you have just given the vehicle a bit of a workout offroad this is a strong possibility. Also check your gearbox mounts.

Take the aircond belts off, and run the Landy, if the noise is gone, it could be the aircond tensioner. Mine went recently, it makes some weird noises, before it seizes.
