    LT95 Hi to Lo dramas

G,day all i just picked up a County with the isuzu 3.9 and the owner said the transfer box kept jumping out when in hi range so on futher inspection looks like the "dog teeth" are badly worn.
So my question is if the box has this kind of ware am I best getting the whole she-bang rebuilt some where in SE QLD? or just the transfer gears sorted?

If the gearbox feels ok (no crunching synchros, bearing rattles or mainshaft endfloat), I would just recon the transfer, which you can do in situ. Usually the condition you describe is caused by shim wear on the intermediate shaft if it is a standard intermediate shaft or abuse if it is a TRB intermediate shaft. I can help with part numbers if you need.

Brian, As it happens, my TRB box has just started this nonsense, along with a slight gear noise throughout.
What you say about abuse makes sense, as I bought the TRB off a guy who raced Rangies, but I thought the bearings etc looked OK- my bad.
Is it a case of new bearings as a fix on the TRB box?.
I just love crawling around on the cold concrete

Just as well as it sounds like you have a bit more crawling to do David
If it is jumping out of gear and some bearing noise I would suspect the intermediate shaft needs new bearings and resetting the preload. Possibly the gear dogs have some damage as well. Drop it out and have a look at it. The bearings are Ford falcon front inner wheel bearings (6 X LR68149/10) and inexpensive from a bearing shop. Check the engaging dogs on all 3 gears and if tapered or chipped/damaged, replace them while you are at it. You will have to check the preload when you reassemble it. Also check the clearance on the T/Case selector fork in the box.
    Cheers......Brian

There are 2 different type of Hi/lo dog teeth design. The later had a "shark tooth" design with a small indentation behind the 45deg lead. These are available in the 0.996 and 1.113 gear sets, the latter being the more robust.
The earlier straight tooth wore the drive face of the tooth on an angle causing the dog clutch to disengage. A common quick fix is to turn the dog clutch around so that it drops out of low range!!!
