If the gearbox feels ok (no crunching synchros, bearing rattles or mainshaft endfloat), I would just recon the transfer, which you can do in situ. Usually the condition you describe is caused by shim wear on the intermediate shaft if it is a standard intermediate shaft or abuse if it is a TRB intermediate shaft.
