    LT85 split case vs HD

Haven't managed to get too much done on the 120 recently due to work although it looks like I'll finally be back on the roster I was supposed to be on. Anyway to replace the ailing LT85 I was looking at importing one from Ashcroft (it would cost the best quote for a basic repair I got locally all in with duties freight etc).

Although I noticed they also do a LT85 HD gearbox as well, steel case mil spec box maybe? Has anyone had any experience with these I'm looking for a bolt up solution rather than a reengineer everything, not looking at a turbo, TBH the LT85 lasted around 240 000kms if a recon one will do that again it will do all I'll ever ask for it.

Elsewhere on this forum it has also been suggested the LT85 from a V8 will fit including the ones fitted to the range rover of the same era with a bell housing swap and other sundries anyone want to confirm deny etc.

correct, swap the bell housings and the lt85 changes from the v8 to the diesel.

the single piece casing is stronger but a bit harder to overhaul. where a single piece casing box fits the split casing unit fits.

if with your normal driving technique you got to 250K Km (near enough) theres no reason to believe another box of the same type wont do the same.

If your casing is good and you have a known good local gearbox builder then Id suggest getting it rebuilt, that will give you a bit more time up your sleeve to sort some other things, If its a case of its got to be on the road now, get the replacement unit.

Most are making exchange noises around 3.5K (thats not fitted either) one was making we may be able to patch it up 2K, the only people that suggested they might be prepared to rebuild it started talking some very big numbers indeed 5-6k plus. Although I suspect its too old we don't want to mess with it factor in there too.

So was looking at bringing one in from Ashcroft which should be around 2k all in figured if I was going to bring one in if the HD is significantly stronger then I may as well go that way.

Ashcroft have said that the late model R380 is as strong or stronger than the LT85 in their opinion. It is relatively easy to modify your LT85 bellhosing to fit an R380.

However, personally, if and when my LT85 ever dies I will be fitting an ISUZU box. The Grubb on here sells kits.

Seen all that if I was looking at big turbos or turbos at all I'd be seriously considering them was going for the bolt in solution.

My (HD) LT85 failed at 240k km. The 110 was in stock standard form at that stage (na) had done little/no towing and very little 4x4ing.
