Leaking from the lift pump into crankcase is more common with 300Tdi. It could happen with a 4BD1 via the IP - the IP is lubricated by engine oil (line from filter housing) and drains into timing cover. The lift pump bolts to side of IP and is operated by the same camshaft that operates the pump plungers.
If much diesel is bypassing the IP plungers, I would expect the performance to be poor and rough running at idle.

when you say gaining oil how much exactally are you talking about? and probably best way to know is to pour the next oil into a clear/clean drum and do an inspection to see if there is layers (indicating other fluids)
