    Question bottom end rebuild?

to cut a long story short...
    the current situation

    4bd1 engine,
head rebuilt and after market turbo reconditioned – about to reassemble but oops the bores scored with a bit of ring stuck , too much for just honing, according to a friend (i’m only a novice at this stuff)
rest of the vehicle is mostly good, unregistered

I’ve pretty much run out of time and inclination to do much more work on this car, anyway its now too big a job for me and i don’t even have a shed.

giving up beating myself up for having gotten into this mess , the question now is how to make the best of the current situation?

rebuild/replace block/engine - how?, who? (am near Byron Bay)
sell it – with the engine in pieces...?
keep it? – wouldn’t mind owning a capable 4wd, thou not really having had much chance to drive this vehicle i don’t really have a feel for it, wonder if it might be a bit chunky for around town or heavy on fuel, thou my life is sorta rural and there’s always the option of further travel
alternatively, could probably pick up a van cheap, would provide more living space, since its not uncommon for me to live out of, or in, my car.
    or ?

the local truck mechanic is going to come and have a look at my county today – will see what he has to say - at least he’s willing to consider it, unlike some mechanics i’ve spoken too who don’t want to deal with something already in pieces. Wonder if i should try looking for someone specialized/familiar with county/isuzu motor?

i noticed there’s comments re ADF disposing of their landy’s – i don’t suppose this might help my situation?

    cheers,

    hello there
well first things first...as everyone else will say "these engines are ment to be rebuilt" honing is probably not on the cards because these motors have liners which are chromoly and are probably best left how they are unless like yours and has a large mark in it but usually even deep marks can be forgotten and will bed in not as good as a perfect bore but still aint the end of the world just as long as the ring isnt still scraping up and down the bore

rebuild kits are around $1100 mark and that includes almost everything you will need. also boost and pyro guages since it is turboed would be much helpful to preventing any big problems.

there will be nothing else wrong with the block they are that strong it isnt funny!
is yours factory turbo? if so i would be interested in buying the bare motor if you decide to sell it as i am going to be looking soon...
what size turbo are you running?

New liner, sort the rings out. Done in a weekend.

Liners can be pulled and seated in-situ. I've done it myself.

    Thanks Dougal and CHIEF,

I get the theory, and done in a weekend sounds great - thou you are probably far more mechanically competent than me, and working in an unpowered paddock isn't the easiest (especially cranky with it, two tick bites in two days). However with a pending house move and possibility of help and tools, my outlook should improve.

I have a boost gauge ready to install when my engines more together, and just googled what a pyro gauge is/does.

sorry - its a plain 4BD1 with an after market 'TB 3102 Nissan turbo'

    Not quite correct.

The liners are not chromoly, they are hard chrome plated. Hard chrome is nothing like decorative chrome, and in the case of the chrome plating on Isuzu liners it has a degree of porosity to hold oil for lubrication. The advantage is that it is very hard -harder than chromoly and probably the best surface for cylinder bores that can be found, but expensive.

thanks for the correction john i was meant to say chrome lined but after months of working on this stupid v8 holden ls1 i have started calling things different names (such as the top piston ring on the ls1 being chromoly)....

i would be quite interested to see what my cylinder liners look like after 400k im asuming still pretty good...

i didnt think that the liners would hold oil thats very interesting .

in your opinion john do you recon getting the piston tops ceramic coated and rods balanced in the presuit for more HP ?
