AFAIK the "new" 4BD1Ts are usually chinese (copies).

It has been reported that there may be some differences to real 4BD1Ts.

I am unconvinced that you couldn't get permission to fit a (late model) 4BD1T to an early-mid 90's defender. Some recent testing I have done shows that a 4BD1T has equivalent or lower emissions than a 300Tdi. It may be expensive to prove it though.

4BD1Ts were fitted to trucks until the early-mid 90's.

    Chinese ? Hmmm.

About the Emissions deal, I only talked briefly with Brad at KLR. I'm in France at the moment and kept getting cut off for some reason, so couldn't discuss further.
He seemed very definite about it.
I'll pursue it with him when I get back to Sydney on 9th November.

He may well have other options as apparently these guys have been exchanging motors in LRs for some time. If I found out anything interesting I'll post it up. I read on the forum that the Iveco 2.8 can be used but no further info.

I had a look at their Chinese 4BD1T motor a couple of years ago. The exhaust manifold is different and causes the turbo to sit higher. The turbo also looked quite small.

As I recall it's made by a company called Dongfeng and is used in a lot of local Chinese medium sized buses. You might get more info from a thread search here and a Google search.

I would contact the RTA directly to see what the deal is.

There are several defenders and disco's floating around with 4BD1s - most were converted in QLD afaik.

The usual rule is that the engine has to be the same age as the car or newer. However as long as yu have an enine which complies with the emission regs at the time (Euro 1 I believe in your case), then it should be possible.

EDIT - see below for emissions standards link.

Does anyone have a list of ADR emission specifications relating to years (County through early Defender)?

Particularly interested in specs of Stage 1 and County NA 4BD1 and what emission standards the engine will meet when after-market turbo is fitted!

    Diana

P.S. a bit difficult and worrying when the vehicle is an import and has no compliance plate, only it's VIN and the import paperwork!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    The details are here:
General Information - Emissions and ADR's

Pre-1995 there were basically no (diesel) emissions standards worth bothering about.

Euro I standards applied on light duty diesels from ~1995/6 - later for heavy vehicles.

What year is your 150? The VIN should give the year (but of course we won't tell the RTA that...)
