    Anyone know Isuzu BG-5F ratios?

One of our Army Inter friends is considering fitting a 6BD1-T to an F1 Inter 6X6, however the box with the engine is an Isuzu BG-5F and we are trying to identify of it is a direct drive 5th or an overdrive 5th?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

problem 1: I'm still trying to figure out how to select gears with it
problem 2: I'm not too keen on trying to turn over a 6BD1 by hand.....

I'd be a bit trank if I had to turn over a nearly 6 litre diesel engine myself!

I'd just unbolt the gearbox from the engine and try it.

You'll get heartily sick of cranking a 6BD1 even with the plugs out.

    That's easy.
One lever is the same as moving your gearlever forwards/backwards and will have 3 positions, the other lever is the same as moving your gearlever side to side across the gate and will have 4 positions on a 6 speed box.

Truck gearboxes usually have reverse near 1st, compared to car gearboxes which usually have reverse near 5th.

    My MSA is
    R 2 4
    1 3 5

A six speed box could be:
    R 1 3 5
    - 2 4 6

    or
    R 2 4 6
    - 1 3 5

or those patterns flipped left/right or up/down

Further to Dougal's post above - being a 5 speed (revealed by '5' in the model number) the top lever will have 3 positions.

My 6 speed has 4 positions and to select the extreme left and right positions the lever has to be pushed against internal spring pressure, while the 2 inner positions have no internal spring resistance (the lever feels floppy, but I use light 'bias' springs in the shift linkage. My best guess is that the 3 positions with the 5 speed box will have 'bias' springs to centre the lever between the extreme left & right positions.

Going by Isuzu boxes I know of, the 1st part of the model number (BG) is the box design, the '5' is number of forward gears, and the suffix (F) is a variant (other variants most likely have different ratios.
